Nutrition Basics for Women's Long-Term Health
27 September 2026 · Global Women's Week
Less about restriction, more about the handful of nutrients women's bodies particularly need.
Iron, calcium, vitamin D, and folate are the nutrients most commonly under-consumed by women, tied directly to menstruation, bone health, and reproductive health. A varied diet usually covers this, but it's worth knowing where each one actually comes from.
Protein deserves more attention across a woman's life, not less as she ages — it supports muscle maintenance, which becomes more important, not less, after 40.
Diet culture pushes restriction as the default. The research instead points toward variety, adequate protein, and enough fiber — with far more long-term payoff than any short-term elimination diet.
Quick tips
- Iron sources: red meat, lentils, spinach, fortified cereals (pair with vitamin C for absorption)
- Calcium + vitamin D work together — dairy, fortified plant milks, and sensible sun exposure all help
- Aim for protein at every meal, not just dinner
