Starting Your First Business: A Step-by-Step Guide
21 September 2026 · Global Women's Week
The practical order of operations, not the inspirational version.
Before a business plan, before a logo, validate the idea: talk to 10–20 real potential customers and see if they'd actually pay for what you're proposing. Most first businesses fail from lack of demand, not lack of polish.
Keep the legal and financial foundation simple at first — separate business banking, basic bookkeeping, and understanding your local business registration requirements. This is unglamorous but prevents expensive problems later.
Launch smaller and sooner than feels comfortable. A minimum version in front of real customers teaches more in a month than a year of planning in isolation.
Quick tips
- Validate demand before building — talk to real potential customers first
- Open a separate business bank account from day one
- Launch small, learn fast, then improve — don't wait for 'perfect'
