Healthy Communication in Relationships

7 September 2026 · Global Women's Week

Most relationship conflict isn't about the stated topic — it's about how it's communicated.

'I' statements ('I feel unheard when...') land very differently than 'you' statements ('you never listen'), because they describe an experience rather than launching an accusation the other person has to defend against.

Timing matters — bringing up a significant issue in the middle of a stressful moment rarely goes well. Naming that you want to talk, and agreeing on a calmer time, usually leads to a more productive conversation.

Active listening — actually repeating back what you heard before responding — sounds simple but is one of the most consistently effective techniques for de-escalating conflict in any relationship, romantic or otherwise.

Quick tips

  • Use 'I feel' statements instead of 'you always/never' framing
  • Choose timing deliberately — avoid big conversations mid-stress
  • Repeat back what you heard before responding, to confirm understanding
