Understanding Domestic Violence Resources and Support

3 September 2026 · Global Women's Week

Information for anyone who needs it, or wants to help someone who does.

Domestic violence includes physical, emotional, financial, and psychological abuse — not only physical harm — and any of these forms alone is serious and worth taking seriously.

Most countries have national or regional domestic violence hotlines offering confidential support, safety planning, and information on legal protections — these exist specifically to help, with no obligation to take any particular action just from calling.

If someone confides in you about their situation, believing them without judgment and asking what kind of support they want — rather than pushing a specific solution — is consistently what survivors say helps most.

Quick tips

  • Abuse includes emotional and financial control, not only physical harm
  • National domestic violence hotlines offer confidential support with no obligation to act immediately
  • If someone confides in you, believe them and ask what support they want, rather than directing them
